ACTIVISM, JOURNALISM AND CIVIL SOCIETY: STRATEGIC MEETING IN MÉRIDA ON MIGRANT CHILDHOOD AND YOUTH

On the 14th October in the city of Mérida (Extremadura), we will hold independent workshops aimed at third-sector organisations and civil society, taking advantage of the presence of journalists in Mérida during the 9th International Congress on Migration Journalism, to facilitate meetings and conversations that would otherwise be difficult to organise.

Both events have their own distinct identity and programs; Fundación porCausa, which organises both events, is the only organisation that can provide this bridge between sectors.

Multisectoral Workshop on Migrant Children and Youth
Mérida, October 14, 2026

Migrant childhood and youth have for years been at the centre of political, social, and media debates, too often marked by misinformation, hate speech, and instrumentalisation. Despite being a statistically small group in Spain, young migrants, especially unaccompanied minors, are repeatedly used to fuel xenophobic narratives. Meanwhile, their situation of vulnerability and lack of protection remains invisible or distorted.

In light of this situation, we organiSed a workshop on October 14 in Mérida for third-sector organizations, institutions, and groups that work with and for young migrants.

THE GOAL IS TO  DEVELOP ROADMAPS AND COLLABORATION STRATEGIES TOGETHER THAT CAN DIRECTLY INFLUENCE PUBLIC POLICIES, COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES, AND PROFESSIONAL PRACTICES.

WHY OCTOBER 14TH IN MERIDA?

The following day, October 15, marks the 9th International Congress on Migration Journalism, the only specialised conference of its kind in the world, which this year is dedicated specifically to media coverage of migrant children and youth. The Fundación porCausa is the organisation hosting both events, which allows us to create a unique space for genuine dialogue between the social sector and the journalism sector—a dialogue that would otherwise be very difficult to facilitate. The two conferences have separate programs and target audiences.

How will the event be structured?

The session will be organised around three panel discussions, each co-ordinated by a leading organisation that provides both thematic direction and institutional support.

1. Public policies and the protection of migrant children and youth: a transnational perspective

This panel will address public policies for the protection of migrant children and youth, with the participation of third-sector organisations working with migrant children and youth in Extremadura and other regions of Spain, as well as organisations based in Latin America and Europe.

2. Migrant youth as agents of change

This panel discussion will focus on migrant youth as agents of change, giving prominence to migrant youth groups and community organisations.

3. Action plans against misinformation and hate speech

The third panel will be dedicated to action plans against misinformation and hate speech, with the joint participation of social organisations and journalists or media outlets.

Fundación porCausa provides the venue, the call for applications, and connections to the journalism community.

If you are a professional in the nonprofit sector and work with migrant children and youth, you can participate in this event free of charge. All you need to do is register and submit your application for consideration. Please note that space is limited to ensure the smooth running of each panel, so not all registrants will ultimately be able to participate.
